UCLA Acquires ALERT AM Emergency Advisory Radio

The 1630 kHz signal can be received on vehicle radios across the expansive UCLA campus as well as in adjacent Los Angeles streets, giving inbound students, faculty and staff the opportunity to be advised before arrival.

Explains UCLA Emergency Manager David Burns, "We use this system for a wide variety of campus emergencies and related traffic problems, where roads are closed due to collisions, work and other situations that might affect the campus population [70,000 people daily]. For example, the following types of occurrences might see significant movement of people in cars:
  • Severe weather alerts.
  • Student and activism protests.
  • Demonstrations and marches (normal parts of college campus activities).
  • Life threatening conditions at school and nearby (police actions, fires).
  • Power failures.
  • Special events (book fairs, VIP visits, student enrollment, breaks)."
According to Burns, typical UCLA broadcasts include "traffic messages, proper use of cellphones in emergencies and directions to the medical center. Campus people and visitors are made aware of the presence of the ALERT AM ra dio signal by signage placed throughout the campus and adjacent community entrances." See UCLA's webpage describing their multi-modal communication system, which includes advisory radio.
